Make sure the broker you use has proper regulation. Another characteristic is that when undesirable things happen (like bankruptcy), the broker provides insurance funds. For FXCM, it is a regulated broker and provides insurance funds.

It is still safe. FXCM is still one of the world's largest retail brokers. The problems experienced by FXCM US recently have been resolved and FXCM US has been acquired by Gain Capital, which is also a large retail broker. All FXCM US clients have been transferred to Gain Capital. FXCM outside the USA was not affected by these issues.

Even if FXCM US went bankrupt, the regulators (CFTC and NFA) would still guarantee client funds as happened with Alpari UK when hit by the SNBomb in January 2015. Your funds will be guaranteed if you trade with a broker regulated by a credible regulatory body such as CFTC, NFA, FCA UK etc.

Choose a broker with credible and trustworthy regulation. Credible regulation among International brokers is CFTC (US), NFA (US), FSA (UK), ASIC (Australia), etc. If a broker has at least one license from these regulatory bodies, then the broker is worth considering.

Other factors to consider after regulation are features and service systems. Choose a broker that has features and facilities that you find most comfortable to use. Especially consider the financial service factor (both deposit and withdrawal). How are the deposit or WD methods, how long does it usually take, are there commissions or deductions for each transaction, etc. If you have found features and services that suit your needs, then you can start opening an account with the broker.
